Why is my page so wide in Internet Explorer?

Whenever a doctype is not set on a website, Internet Explorer reverts its Document Mode to Quirks Mode, instead of the correct IE8 (or IE7) Standards Mode, causing the Disqus embed to load wider than the page itself. This can be fixed by setting a doctype on your website.

Checking for Quirks mode

This is only necessary if you want to verify that your website is indeed causing Internet Explorer to revert to Quirks Mode; otherwise, see 'Setting a doctype' below.

  1. Open Internet Explorer
  2. Open Tools > Developer Tools
  3. In the top menu bar, check your current Document Mode (not Browser Mode).

Setting a doctype

While any doctype will force Internet Explorer to use a Document Mode other than Quirks Mode, the W3C recommends the most up-to-date validation: <!DOCTYPE html>

So the first few lines your site's HTML might now look something like this:
